Why Choose Wire Fall Arrestors?
When it comes to self-retracting lifelines (SRLs), wire fall arrestors are the preferred choice for heavy-duty industrial applications. Unlike webbing lifelines, cable fall arrest blocks utilise high-tensile galvanised or stainless steel wire rope. This makes them significantly more resistant to abrasion, chemicals, and sharp edges - essential for welding environments or sites with abrasive structures.
Key Benefits of Our Cable Fall Arrest Blocks:
Rugged Durability: Ideal for long-term outdoor use and harsh weather conditions.
Corrosion Resistance: Available in stainless steel options for offshore and marine environments.
Rapid Arrest: Sensitive braking systems that stop a fall within centimetres, minimising impact forces on the user.
Versatility: Suitable for use with tripods, davits, and overhead anchorage points.
Wire Fall Arrestor: Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a wire fall arrestor?
A wire fall arrestor (also known as a cable fall arrest block) is a self-retracting lifeline that uses a steel wire rope to secure a worker at height. It automatically extends and retracts as the worker moves, but locks instantly in the event of a sudden acceleration or fall, much like a car seatbelt.
2. When should I use a wire fall arrestor instead of webbing?
Wire fall arrestors should be used in environments where webbing might be damaged, such as near sharp edges, heat sources (welding/grinding), or where chemical exposure is a risk. They are generally more robust and have a longer service life in heavy industrial settings.
3. Can wire fall arrestors be used horizontally?
Many cable fall arrest blocks are designed specifically for vertical use. However, if you require a device for horizontal applications (where the cable may trail over an edge), you must ensure the device is "Leading Edge" rated. Contact ULS at 01384 986 026 to ensure you select a model tested for horizontal use.
4. What is the inspection interval for cable fall arrest blocks?
In accordance with UK safety standards, wire fall arrestors must undergo a thorough examination by a competent person at least every 12 months (or every 6 months if used for man-riding or in particularly arduous conditions). Users should also perform a visual and functional "pull-test" before every use.
